Meditation pavilion
Architecture + interior
2024
Alentejo, Portugal
Originally, a still room was a very important part of the house,
used as a home apothecary where plants were being distilled into essential oils as medical care
In a world of noise and distraction, what is the still room for the mind to practice inner-care?
As a metaphor for the original still rooms,
Still room today acts as the “space of pause”
to embrace stillness,
to still the mind,
to restore inner space,
to liberate new creative energy.
Inspired from the dynamics of a sacred space, Still room celebrates the quiet
as a retreat destination for meditation, rest and creation.
Fully immersed in the beauty of its landscape,
Still room transforms the energy of silence into
a shelter for the body, mind and soul.
The passage from outside to inside
awakens a sense of pause, presence and calm.
Built from massive burnt cork blocks, the progressive evolution of the wall thickness opens
a sensorial dialogue between stillness, architecture and nature.
A return to analogue being.
Allowing yourself
to slow down,
to hold space and time in the “pause in between”,
to celebrate the abundance of life,
to invite rebirth.
Now.
